Hellloooo men of Northampton!
We're well into 2012, and more than a full month since my last post. 2011 was a great year in queer. We had Zach Wahls proudly speaking up for his two moms, up-and-coming Alex Morse handily taking the Mayor's helm in Holyoke, the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, and New York state legalized same-sex marriage. And did I forget to mention Zachary Quinto coming out in October? Oh, Spock me….
Ahem.
Sorry guys, I lost my train of thought for a few minutes there. Let's blame it on Madonna's half-time show in the Super Bowl yesterday, which had a certain Cirque du Soleil feel to it. Looking through my Facebook newsfeed, I can tell precisely when ball play stopped and the half-time show started. It's pretty much at the point when my straight friends stopped posting and my gay friends started gushing reverence, or went completely radio-silent. As my friend Michael points out, rightly, no matter what you may think about Madonna, "the world is debating her a day after her media moment, [so] some things never change."
Oh forget that. I'm still thinking about Zachary. Can you blame me?
Okay, okay. Time to get down to business. The gay social scene is starting to pick up again in February, and we have a bunch of new events on the calendar. Of note, I hope you aren't busy this Saturday, February 11, because you have your choice of events. Just in time for Valentine's Day, either check out the "Come Fly with Me" variety show from Smoke and Meers, at Pizza d'Action in Holyoke, or have a dance with your sweetheart at the LGBT Coalition's Heart to Heart Valentines Dance, held at Smith College. Unfortunately, these two great events conflict with their times, but if you get creative you can probably squeeze in both events. Check out the main page at monoho.com for links to more details.
Don't have a date for Valentine's Day? On Sunday, take a trip out east to Mixer's Cocktail Lounge in Worcester to check out the Lonely Hearts Club speed dating. Speed dating looks like a ton of fun, and you never know - Mr. Right might be out there waiting for you! Maybe you'll get lucky and Cupid will be aiming his arrows true =) If that's the case, or even if not, make sure you come to the Northampton-area men's social next Friday (February 17) at the Hotel Northampton. I was actually at January's social, making my first appearance in months, and it was an absolute blast. I caught up with a few old friends, made a few new friends, and caroused downtown Northampton afterwards. Of course, as always, more information about speed dating and the monthly Northampton social can be found at monoho.com.
I need to also make a sports service announcement: dodge ball only has a few weeks left, so come out and play! We need some able-bodied guys to help fill out some teams. It's a great evening of running and throwing and dodging, and not nearly as traumatic as dodge ball was in high school gym class. So please, free up your Monday nights at 7:00pm, and check out monoho.com for details.
Well guys, that's about it for now. It's a new year, and we have a lot in store, hopefully to make 2012 even more fun and rewarding than 2011. There's so much ahead of us - socials, socializing, Pride (May 12 in Northampton), and more. Thanks for tuning in, and I hope to see you out and about in the Northampton area more this year!
